for dozens of residents and it all started thanks to the 80-yard pipe burst. cbs 5 reporter aiolis is a hairington joins us how -- aiolis is a hairington joins us lou. >> reporter: frank, basically the pipe was very, very old. it failed and pumped water into the neighborhood. take a look behind me at some of the mess it's left behind. we have bulldozers the trying the clean up -- trying to clean up some of the mud and a lot of neighbors out taking a look at the scene. they told me they never thought they would see. a daly city neighborhood covered in mud. >> you cannot take it out your car because the mud is all the way up to the tire. >> reporter: a sheer break of the 18-inch water pipe caused flooding and forced evacuations spilling 45,000 gallons of water near the street. this happened near hillside park overlooking the saint avenue. you can see where the water came rushing down the hill causing a mud slide leaving this picnic area almost unrecognizable. >> it's covered in three to four feet of mud. >> reporter: emmanuel shows us how the mud narrowly missed his house. >> i could

hotel with no vacancy is now completely empty because of a hazmat situation. >> cbs 5's anne makovec joins us from burlingame where hundreds of guest, i would imagine, anne, they are just waiting to go back to sleep. >> reporter: they were woken up in the middle of the night by an alarm, a lot of them have spent hours in their cars here in the parking lot. i'm at the embassy suites in burlingame on anza boulevard. you can see emergency personnel still here on scene. now, this hotel has been cleared. but they are starting the process of getting people back into their rooms. they are prioritizing people with early-morning flights. the hotel is right by the airport. so several people are trying get out of town. here's how it started according to some of the officials on scene. there was an alarm at 12:30 this morning saying that there was going to be a -- there was a carbon monoxide issue. [ loud background noise ] >> reporter: so officials came in and they were able to evacuate the hotel. they sounded an alarm. they then got on the bull horn and told everybody to evacuate and it turns

evil in the parking lot and evil was not going to leave. captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> pelley: good evening. general john allen, the general in charge of the war in afghanistan, is under investigation tonight in connection with the same woman who helped bring down the director of the c.i.a., retired general david petraeus. now general allen's nomination to be supreme allied commander of nato is on hold. two of the top military men of their generation have been brought low by their acquaintance with jill kelley, a tampa socialite seen here at her home with the story playing on the t.v. behind her. last spring, kelley complained to the f.b.i. of receiving harassing anonymous e-mails. turned out, those e-mails had been written by a jealous paula broadwell. the investigation then exposed broadwell's affair with c.i.a. director david petraeus. then the f.b.i. found an e-mail trail linking kelley to general allen. and tonight bob orr picks up the story for us from there. bob? >> reporter: good evening, scott, well, the announcement came in

streets of a neighborhood near hillside park. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in daly city where an aging pipe is apparently blamed for the problem. >> reporter: michelle, you are correct. and city officials say that they are going to work to restore or repair that pipe and they actually admit there could be more in this area. but let's focus on the clean-up right now. last night's cleaning efforts weren't successful in this daly city neighborhood. the water main burst brought about inches of mud down on the road. here's a look from our cbs 5 chopper. neighbors were startled at 4:30 a.m. when police told them to leave their homes. 45,000 gallons of water came downhill. city leaders say it was because of a cast iron pipe made in the 1930s. >> you can see the pipe actually sheared off. we have an aging system. we know that we have pipes in the ground that are probably, you know, close or past their useful life. that's not uncommon within any community within the bay area. >> reporter: no homes were damaged. about 12 families were told to leave. some cars were swallowed up in the muck. city
